The Downfall of the Professional Wedding Photographer

Recently, The New York Times explored why brides and grooms are foregoing hiring a professional photographer for their own guests. To keep in trend with the more casual and budget conscience ceremony and reception, couples are now asking their friends to track their wedding on Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and Twitter with the use of a unique hashtag. Some are even going as far as asking their guests to bring GoPro cameras and Mini iPads to capture the special day and share with newlyweds after the occasion.

To combat this new fad, photographers are offering packages to incentivize newly engaged couples to hire them. Some packages may include one free engagement photo shoot, thank you cards, a free printed photo album and more depending on what the photographer is offering.

Have you seen this trend at weddings you’ve planned? What were the results like? Share your experiences in the comments below.
